Woohoo, Della and Kevin pulled it off! What a tremendous job they did of creating a personalized and memorable wedding day at the Carlyle House in Old Town Alexandria. Della and I started the afternoon off at the Hotel Monaco where she was getting all done up, then we walked down to meet Kevin for a first look at the infamous corner of King and Pitt Streets. The first look took us down the side streets of Old Town scoping out nooks and crannies for portraits. Then off we went, wedding party in tow, to the historic Carlyle House in Old Town Alexandria where we crossed paths with a street performer rockin’ out on the banjo… ok, so he was just sitting and picking away, but it was still cool!
With a yummy color palette of deep purples and oranges, the patio of the Carlyle house was transformed into a magical place including board games, I-spy games, and a massive D&D die for guests to roll. Rather than numbers, the die was littered with things for Kevin and Della to do – and as true gamers, they had to follow the rules and play along!
Kevin and Della brought together so many beautiful aspects of their individual personalities—as well as the relationship they’ve been building—to create a special wedding day. Congratulations you two, you did it your way and it was fabulous!!!! It was hard won, as most weddings are… the planning can become a bit overwhelming (I know I’ve been there!) and sometimes we feel like we are losing sight of who we are and what we really want the day to be about. Your wedding was a reminder that a wedding can be whatever you make it, and it was apparent in the vows you wrote to one another that you are deeply committed to always supporting one another in each and every endeavor.
Della & Kevin, I wish you a long happy life, I know you’ll make it a magical adventure together.
And a BIG thank you to Jenna Miller and John Mortenson for their excellent work as 2nd shooters and lighting assistants! Couldn’t have done it without you both!!
And another big big shout out to Anne Simpson for making Della and Kevin’s wedding day vision into reality! Wedding coordinator extraordinaire she is!

More of my favorites from the day soon to come, but for now, here are some great ones of these zany adorable newly weds…
A very big congratulations to Ann & Jason on their marriage this past weekend at The Osprey’s at Belmont Bay in Woodbridge, VA. It was amazing to see Ann after 20 years. We graduated the same year from HB Woodlawn, so it was pretty surreal and fantastic to be a part of this celebration. Here we have a little sneak peek of a few portraits of the happy couple. Keep your eyes peeled for more on the blog from Ann & Jason’s wedding day!
To see the fun and whimsical favorites from the day, you can visit the full gallery from our time at Glen Echo!
What fun getting to experience Glen Echo Park with children who haven’t been there before! That was the case this past weekend with Maya and Fin! I spent so much of my childhood at Glen Echo (not to mention most of my 20’s too), so coming back here to photograph weddings, family, and the like is always so joyful! It really is an ideal place for taking portraits of kids. Not only are there plenty of places for them to explore and run free, the back drop is so colorful and easy to photograph! We had a blast climbing, running, spinning and jumping on, off, and around the entire historic grounds of Glen Echo.
Maya and Fin were adorable, and had a whole host of ideas for posing which I LOVE. Not to mention, Maya had some seriously fantastic fashion accessories she wanted to make sure to document. What great kids! They just made my day!
To see my favorite images from the day, visit the Ward Family gallery page!
What can I say about the Ward family, except that I was SO impressed by all of them! I have a smaller family, so when I get the opportunity to be around a big one I am always watching with interest and curiosity. I noticed right away how much respect and love moved between all of the siblings, parents and kids! And then walking into the house I could feel the history of the Ward family; it emanated from the photos on the walls, the trinkets from years past and trips around the world. The house was gorgeous and warm and cozy all at the same time. Like most families these days, the adult kids are spread out across the country so dad’s 70th birthday was a great excuse for everyone to come together to celebrate. And with 7 grandkids, celebrate they DID! It was a jubilant and hilarious affair complete with musical performances, and a spur of the moment Conga line! It just doesn’t get much better than that!
It was a true joy to be a part of this celebration! I think the images speak for themselves as to how this family relates to one another. It was truly a memorable experience for me.

I can’t believe it, but in the last year and a half to two years I’ve been so extremely fortunate to photograph the weddings of a handful of HB Woodlawn alumni! I can’t even begin to express the pure joy and honor I feel. For all of you who know HB, you understand the bond we all share. But for those of you who may not be familiar, HB Woodlawn is more than just a school — it’s a place that has turned out some of the most exceptional human beings I’ve known. I for one know that if I had gone anywhere other than HB, my life would not have turned out as well as it has. OK, I could go on and on about HB, but this has got to be a super quick post because Darius and Jennifer are getting married THIS weekend! I’m tickled pink to be photographing the big day, and also that we snuck in a quick engagement shoot in DC just under the wire. Darius and Jennifer will be wed in DC just a few short days from now, so I wanted to share a few of my favorites from our time together last week!
Stay tuned for what I know are going to be some raucous wedding images!
